Position Summary
The Saw Operator runs industrial saw equipment to cut raw metal material into the lengths and quantities needed for production. This position checks the material, measurements, part numbers, and paperwork and uses an overhead crane to safely move raw material to and from the saw.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Set up and operate industrial saw equipment to cut raw metal material.
• Read and follow work orders, travelers, cut lists, and job instructions.
• Make sure the correct material type, size, part number, cut length, and quantity are being used for each job.
• Measure raw material and set the saw for the required cut length.
• Use the overhead crane to safely lift, move, and position raw material at the saw.
• Use proper slings, chains, hooks, or other lifting equipment for the load.
• Make sure material is supported and secured before beginning the cut.
• Check the first cut piece before continuing the job.
• Measure cut pieces using calipers, micrometers, tape measures, and other measuring tools.
• Continue checking cut length and quantity throughout the job.
• Watch the saw while it is running and make basic adjustments as needed.
• Check saw blades for wear or damage and change blades when trained and authorized.
• Remove burrs or sharp edges from cut pieces when required.
• Count, identify, and stage cut material for the next operation.
• Clearly identify and store leftover raw material so it can be used for future jobs.
• Report material shortages, damaged material, incorrect counts, or other problems that could affect the job.
• Stop and ask for help when instructions are unclear, material does not match the paperwork, or cut pieces do not meet requirements.
• Complete production paperwork and report material used, completed pieces, remaining material, downtime, and scrap correctly.
• Meet the company's production and quality expectations.
• Keep the saw, raw material area, and surrounding work area clean and organized.
• Complete basic saw checks and routine maintenance as needed.
• Follow all company safety rules and wear the required personal protective equipment.
• Help in other production areas when needed.
• Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Previous saw operating, material handling, or manufacturing experience is preferred.
• Ability to read and follow work orders, travelers, cut lists, and job instructions.
• Ability to use calipers, micrometers, tape measures, and other measuring tools correctly.
• Basic math skills, including fractions, decimals, and measurements.
• Ability to identify and keep track of different raw materials, sizes, and part numbers.
• Ability to safely operate an overhead crane and use lifting equipment after completing required training.
• Ability to notice blade, machine, material, or cut-quality problems.
• Ability to work independently and communicate with supervisors, Quality, and other employees.
• Dependable, safety-minded, and able to pay close attention to details.
Education and Experience
• High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
• Previous saw operating, material handling, or manufacturing experience is preferred.
• Related training or work experience may also be considered.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand and walk for most of the shift.
• Ability to regularly bend, reach, push, pull, and handle raw material and cut metal pieces.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds.
• Ability to safely handle metal parts that may have sharp edges.
• Ability to see measurements, inspect cut material, and safely operate the saw and overhead crane.
• This position works in a manufacturing environment around industrial saws, overhead cranes, moving equipment, noise, metal chips, oils, sharp edges, and changing temperatures. Wear required personal protective equipmentin designated areas.
